Old cars saving radio, but it’s headed for disruption

Citi analyst David Kaynes says that radio could be the next traditional media sector to be "disrupted" by internet advertising. He says the reason that radio has remained relatively immune from "digital disruption" to date is the average age of Australian cars, with owners of older cars unable to access digital radio in their vehicles. Metropolitan radio stations currently generate around 70 per cent of their weekday revenue from the drive and breakfast shifts.

Victoria’s shadow attorney-general John Pesutto contends federal action is needed to address what he contends is a growing gang culture in that state. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has accused Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews of lacking leadership over what Turnbull claims is increased lawlessness and gang violence in Victoria. However, acting Roads and Road Safety Minister Phillip Dalidakis claims Turnbull is playing "games", instead of offering to work with the Victorian government on the issue.

Media Super has paid $A1 million to acquire a 17 per cent stake in the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s instrument fund. The ACO instrument fund was launched in 2011, at which time unit prices were $A1.00; they were valued at $A1.40 in April 2017. It invests in stringed instruments, with its most recent purchase being the Amati Cello, which it acquired for $US1 million ($A1.4 million) in 2016. ACO MD Richard Evans says choosing a new instrument can be quite a lengthy process.

Mail model: PM suggests postal survey on republic

Original article by Andrew Tillett

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has no intention of revisiting the idea of Australia becoming a republic while Queen Elizabeth remains monarch. However, Turnbull, who was head of the Australian Republic Movement before becoming an MP, says the method by which Australians would elect a president in the event it becomes a republic could be decided by a postal ballot, and this would be held before any referendum on the issue.

The average balanced superannuation fund returned 10.5 per cent in the 12 months to December, the first time in five years that returns have been of double-digit nature. The 10.5 per cent return achieved by super funds exceeded the total average return of 9.1 per cent from property across capital cities for the 12 months to November. However, superannuation experts warn that the strong returns achieved in the past year are not likely to be repeated in 2018.

PM confident no harm to relationship with Trump over Downer meeting

Original article by Andrew Tillett, Alice Uribe
The Australian Financial Review – Page: Online : 2-Jan-18

It has been revealed that the FBI investigation into whether Russia possibly interfered with the US 2016 election was apparently sparked by a comment to Alexander Downer. An aide to Donald Trump told Downer, Australia’s High Commissioner to the UK, in May 2016 that Russia had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton, Trump’s presidential rival at the time. This information was subsequently passed onto US intelligence officials, which led to the FBI investigation, which also looked at whether the Trump camp was in collusion with Russia. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull does not think the revelations concerning Downer will have any impact on his relationship with Trump.

Industry superannuation funds set for growth

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 22-Dec-17

Of the 13.4 million Australians aged 14 and over with superannuation, 6.8 million (50.7%) are members of an industry fund. This is well ahead of retail funds with 3.9 million (29.1%) and all other types combined, which make up only 2.7 million. This is one of the major findings from the new 2017 edition of the Roy Morgan ‘Superannuation & Wealth Management in Australia’ report. Although the median balance of industry fund members is currently only $38,500, which is lower than the market average of $57,800, this has a lot to do with the lower median age of industry fund members. The current median age of their members is only 39.6 years, well below all other superannuation types and as a result they have the best long term growth potential. Self-managed superannuation fund members (SMSFs) have the oldest median member age with 59.0 years, followed by public sector funds (49.6 years) and retail funds (45.7 years).

A new analysis by the Treasury notes that since 2001 Australia has failed to respond to the global trend to reduce corporate tax rates. The Treasury briefing also cautions that Australian wages, investment, economic growth and the federal Budget will be adversely affected if federal parliament fails to reduce the company tax rate. The release of the Treasury analysis has coincided with the passage through both houses of Congress of US President Donald Trump’s tax package.
