Digital giant Google has responded to news publishers’ concerns by adopting a "flexible sampling" model for news content accessed via its search results. This will replace the "first click free" model, and allows publishers to determine how many of their news articles consumers can read before requiring a paid subscription. Richard Gingras of Google says the company will also co-operate with publishers in streamlining the process of signing up for paid subscriptions.

Toyota’s Altona manufacturing plant in Melbourne will close on 3 October 2017, with the loss of 2,500 jobs. John Conomos, the former head of Toyota Australia, says the Japanese car-maker would have maintained a local manufacturing presence if Holden or Ford had also decided to remain in Australia. He adds that Toyota had been planning to build a third model in Australia, most likely a sports utility vehicle, when its rivals announced plans to end local production. Holden’s assembly plant in Adelaide will close on 20 October.

China will launch an emissions trading scheme by the end of 2017. The ETS is expected to initially cover power stations, but it will be expanded to cover a range of other industries by 2020, including steel and aluminium production. The ETS could be expected to have a detrimental impact on the level of Australian coal exports to China, currently worth $A8 billion a year, and comes at a time when other regional consumers of Australian coal are imposing similar emission measures.

Economic modelling by the Chamber of Minerals & Energy of Western Australia highlights the potential impact of the State Government’s proposal to increase the gold royalty from 2.5 per cent to 3.75 per cent. The modelling, which is based on 27 gold mines, suggests that the royalty hike would reduce the gold sector’s cash flow by about $A125m a year and cost up to 3,000 jobs. Saracen Mineral Holdings Raleigh Finlayson notes that a further 2,000 direct jobs would be lost if the gold price fell to $A1,400 per tonne.
