Prime Minister Scott Morrison recently ruled out any increase in the goods and services tax. However, there is growing support within the Coalition’s ranks for an overhaul of fiscal relations between the federal and state governments. Some Liberal MPs have proposed giving the states more power to raise their own revenue. Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull proposed such a move in 2016, whereby federal income tax rates would be reduced and the states would impose their own income tax to make up for the revenue shortfall.

Vow And Declare, the first Australian-bred horse to win the Melbourne Cup since 2009, was passed in at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. The horse was bred by builder and hobby breeder Paul Lanskey; it had a reserve of $60,000 but failed to attract a bid. Vow And Declare was subsequently bought by a diverse group of investors from across Australia. Trainer Danny O’Brien was cleared over a long-running cobalt scandal in 2018, while it was the first Melbourne Cup win for jockey Craig Williams in his 16th attempt.

No market for new uranium mines: Cameco

Canada-based Cameco will produce just nine million pounds of uranium in 2020; instead, the bulk of the uranium it supplies to customers will be sourced from the spot market. CEO Tim Gitzel says there is no economic case at present for the construction of new uranium mines, given the large amount of uranium that has been stockpiled. The spot price of uranium averaged $US25.68 a pound in the September quarter, which is well below the long-term price that is required for Cameco’s mines in Australia to be viable.

ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence up to 113.5

ANZ-Roy Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence rose 2.8% to 113.5 in the week ended 3 November, after falling 1.1% in the previous week. Households’ views towards current financial conditions rose 1.6%; views towards future financial conditions gained 2.6%, rising for a fourth consecutive week. Consumers’ views toward current economic conditions gained 2.6% and views towards future economic conditions rose 6.8%. The ‘time to buy a major household item’ was up 1.3%, but the four-week average for inflation expectations declined by 0.1ppt to 4.0%.

Independence makes $312m hostile bid

Nickel miner Independence Group is offering one of its shares for every share in Panoramic Resources, valuing the takeover target at $0.476 per share. Independence MD Peter Bradford says Panoramic had previously rejected several approaches regarded a friendly merger, prompting the hostile bid. Bradford anticipates further consolidation among nickel miners, and he expects the recent rise in the price of nickel to be sustained.

New ACCC case targets Google

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission is preparing an antitrust case against Google over the collapse of mobile advertising group Unlockd. The ACCC’s case will centre on whether Google’s conduct in relation to Unlockd constituted a breach of section 46 of the Competition and Consumer Act, which prohibits the misuse of market power. Google is also the subject of antitrust proceedings in the US.

Tennis boss helped Seven win TV rights

The Federal Court has commenced hearing a civil lawsuit against former Tennis Australia executives Harold Mitchell and Steve Healy. The Australian Securities & Investments Commission has made a number of allegations about the pair regarding the negotiations for a tennis broadcasting rights deal in 2012. Amongst other things, Mitchell is alleged to have provided the Seven Network with details of rival bids. The advertising industry veteran has denied the allegations.

Aussie Broadband is the winner of Roy Morgan’s Internet Service Provider of the Month Award for September 2019, with a customer satisfaction rating of 88%. The achievement marks Aussie Broadband’s first win in the Customer Satisfaction Awards. It is well ahead of a trio of TPG Telecom brands, including iiNet (78%), Internode (78%) and TPG (76%), as well as the Vocus Group-owned iPrimus (74%). These customer satisfaction ratings have been drawn from the Roy Morgan Single Source survey, derived from in-depth personal interviews with over 1,000 Australians each week face-to-face in their homes.

The Apple iPhone is the winner of Roy Morgan’s Handset Provider of the Month Award for September 2019, with a customer satisfaction rating of 92.6%. It was closely followed by Google Phone (92.5%), Motorola (92%), Samsung (89.9%) and LG (88.9%). Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says Apple iPhone has been the market leader in terms of customer satisfaction for many years, winning the past seven Roy Morgan Mobile Handset of the Year Awards. However, the strong performance of Google during 2019 may represent a changing of the guard when it comes to phone handset satisfaction with a close contest between the two brands to decide this year’s winner. These latest customer satisfaction ratings have been drawn from the Roy Morgan Single Source survey, derived from in-depth face-to-face interviews with over 50,000 Australians each year in their homes.
