May Inflation Expectations are based on personally interviewing a nationwide sample of 4,011 Australians aged 14+ face-to -face in their own homes.

AMPD Research estimates that Stan boasts about 1.4 million subscribers in Australia, compared with around 5.3 million for Netflix. Stan faces a number of headwinds, including a rise in programming costs as its existing content deals expire and the expected loss of its content deal with Disney as the US media giant prepares to launch its own subscription video-on-demand. Dishwasher ownership grows and purchasing of dishwashing liquid declines in 2019

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 17-Jun-19

New research from Roy Morgan shows that 11.92 million Australians aged 14+ (58%) now own a dishwasher, up more than 2.2 million (+8ppts) from four years ago. While dishwasher ownership has grown in recent years, purchasing of dishwashing liquids has barely changed over the last two years, although there has been a clear decline as a share of the growing population. Dishwashing liquid is still bought by 11.91 million Australians (57.9%); this is an increase from the 10.96 million (56.6%) who bought dishwashing liquid in 2015, but it is a clear decline from two years ago when 11.97 million Australians (60.3%) bought dishwashing liquid. Australia’s leading dishwashing liquid is still Morning Fresh, which is bought by 36.6% of buyers of dishwashing liquid, but down by 1ppt from two years ago. Other leading dishwashing liquid brands to decline over the last two years include Palmolive (down 2.6ppts), Fairy (down 1.5ppts) and Supermarket brands (down 0.3ppts). However, Earth Choice, an environmentally-conscious product as the name suggests, is now bought by 24.2% of dishwashing liquid buyers in an average six months (up 1.7ppts from two years ago) and Green Choice is now bought by 2.5% (up 0.4ppts).

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher says the federal government may be open to accepting all of the recommendations of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission’s final report on its inquiry into digital platforms. He adds that Australia would be prepared to act alone in regulating large technology companies, although he adds that global regulatory action is needed for a consistent policy approach. Fletcher has also flagged the possibility of imposing a levy on digital video streaming providers such as Netflix to offset traditional TV broadcasters’ loss of revenue.

Rate cut may lead to riskier investing

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 31 : 13-Jun-19

Anthony Doyle of Fidelity International says Australian savers are likely to seek out higher-yielding and higher-risk investments following the Reserve Bank’s decision to reduce the cash rate to a new low of 1.25 per cent. He notes that there was a similar trend in the UK following the global financial crisis, with Britain’s cash rate reaching a low of just 25 basis points. Doyle also expects the search for yield to bolster Australia’s corporate bond market.

Rethink press inquiry and act, PM urged

Communications Minister Paul Fletcher says the federal government has made no decision on a parliamentary inquiry into press freedom in the wake of the Australian Federal Police’s recent media raids. However, some Coalition MPS have expressed concern that the issue may become politicised if there is a parliamentary inquiry. Liberal MP Craig Kelly argues that a special inquiry into the actions of the AFP is not necessary as parliament has oversight of the law enforcement agency.

Labor has been urged to support the federal government’s Ensuring Integrity Bill in the wake of the controversy surrounding Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union official John Setka. Labor opposed the bill – which amongst other things would allow courts to disqualify union officials for repeated breaches of civil law – in the previous parliament. Setka has refused to stand down as the CFMMEU’s Victorian secretary in the wake of comments he allegedly made about domestic violence campaigner Rosie Batty, while Labor leader Anthony Albanese is seeking to have him expelled from the party.

Assistant governor Luci Ellis has indicated that the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment may in fact be as low as 3.5 per cent, adding that the central bank may have to keep reducing the cash rate until the unemployment rate reaches this level.
