Institutional investors have warned that they will vote against the re-election of three AMP directors at the upcoming AGM, even if chairman Catherine Brenner resigns. She is widely tipped to step down in the wake of a board meeting on 29 April. CEO Craig Meller recently resigned after misconduct at AMP was exposed by the banking royal commission. The revelations have weighed on AMP’s share price, which has fallen to its lowest level in more than five years.

An independent panel has spent more than six months examining the Commonwealth Bank’s governance and culture on behalf of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. The panel, which consists of corporate director Jillian Broadbent, former Australian Competition & Consumer Commission chairman Graeme Samuel and former APRA chairman John Laker, is due to report its findings to APRA on 30 April, with APRA to make the findings public in the next few days. It is likely that the panel will be critical of a lack of emphasis on risk culture at the bank, and of its investments in risk systems.

Grocery suppliers have been advised by German supermarket operator Kaufland that it plans to open its first Australian stores by the end of 2018. Kaufland has been advertising for executives in the past few months, with former Metcash and Woolworths executive Mark Hewlett joining it as chief operating officer. Its latest advertisements have called for executives with experience in areas such as fashion, accessories and homewares, leading to suggestions that it might be trying to take customers from general merchandise stores such as Kmart, Target and Big W.

Regional TV urges more deregulation

Original article by Max Mason
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 29 : 30-Apr-18

WIN Corporation, Prime Media and Southern Cross Austereo want the Federal Government to further relax cross-media ownership laws by scrapping the rule that a company can own just one TV broadcasting licence in a single market. This would enable regional broadcasters to merge, which Prime CEO Ian Audsley warns is crucial to the sector’s survival. He notes that the cost of buying content is rising while audiences and advertising revenue are fragmenting. Regional broadcasters have also called for the "two radio licences to a market" rule to be scrapped.

Australians aged +14 expect inflation of 4.3% per year over the next two years, according to the Roy Morgan Inflation Expectations Index for March 2018. This is down 0.1% from a month ago, the second straight monthly fall, and also down 0.1% from March 2017. Inflation Expectations have now fallen for two consecutive months for the first time since June 2017 and are lower year over year for the first time since December 2016. Following these consecutive decreases Inflation Expectations are now well below the seven-year average of 5.0%. Analysing Inflation Expectations by political affiliation shows that ALP supporters are driving the fall, with the Inflation Expectations of L-NP supporters unchanged on a year ago and Greens supporters now with slightly higher Inflation Expectations.

Candidate’s plan to exhume 6000 market bodies

Original article by Clay Lucas
The Age – Page: 11 : 27-Apr-18

Melbourne lord mayoral candidate Gary Morgan has pledged to exhume upwards of 6,000 skeletons buried under the Queen Victoria Market carpark if he wins the upcoming election. Morgan said the skeletons would be DNA tested, and their descendants would be allowed to decide where they should be buried. Morgan, who was one of six candidates taking part in a forum at the Melbourne Press Club, said exhuming the skeletons would enable an above-ground car park to be moved underground instead, with a park to be put on the surface. Other campaign promises aired at the forum included a proposal by Labor candidate Jennifer Yang to ban alcohol at the Town Hall.
