DDB Sydney has won a Gold Lion at the annual Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity for its Grave of Thrones: Final Resting Place advertising campaign for pay-TV group Foxtel. Meanwhile, Mindshare Sydney won a silver Lion for a Foxtel cricket app which used artificial intelligence to forecast when a wicket was likely to fall. TBWA Melbourne, Naked Communications and VML&R are among the other Australia ad agencies that won awards at Cannes.

Accenture paid $63m for The Monkeys

It has been revealed that a May 2017 deal for consulting firm Accenture to acquire Sydney-based creative agency The Monkeys was worth $A63m. The Monkeys posted a net profit of $A2.45m in 2015-16 and revenue of $A21.6m. The deal is part of a growing trend for consulting firms to diversify into the advertising and marketing sector. However, WPP Group’s Sir Martin Sorrell is among those to have questioned the merits of the deal given the different corporate cultures at Accenture and The Monkeys.

Facebook in crosshairs of metrics war

The annual media CEO survey carried out by "The Australian" shows that media and advertising industry leaders agree that action is needed to address the recent audience measurement scandals at digital rivals such as Facebook. Many of the media CEOs stressed the importance of having such metrics audited by a third party, while some noted the fact that TV remains the best way to reach the largest audience.

Investors approve STW, WPP merger

More than 99 per cent of STW Communications Group shareholders have endorsed a proposed merger with WPP Group’s Australian division. STW will change its name to WPP AUNZ and retain its Australian sharemarket listing. It will be headed by STW CEO Mike Connaghan, who has flagged an eventual reduction in the number of businesses owned by the combined group. It will boast revenue of about $A850m.

Woolies turns to Saatchi for brand refresh

Andrew Hicks has been appointed as the director of marketing at Woolworths, a role he has held in an acting capacity since the resignation of chief marketing officer Tony Phillips in May 2015. Meanwhile, Woolworths has hired advertising agency M&C Saatchi to develop a new marketing campaign for its supermarkets business. Leo Burnett has been the retailer’s creative agency for the last two years, and was responsible for revamping the long-running Fresh Food People campaign. It also developed the not-so-successful Cheap Cheap campaign.

SMI: Ten’s revenue share rises as rivals tumble with newspapers down nearly 30 per cent

The July 2015 Standard Media Index (SMI) shows that Network Ten increased its share of ad revenue from media agencies by 3.2 per cent to 24.4 per cent, year-on-year. Newspapers recorded sharp falls, with media agency spend declining 29.4 per cent to $A47.2 million, $A19.6 million less than in July 2014. Digital bookings rose 6.7 per cent to $A123.5 million although late digital bookings are expected to cause the paid media market for July to be flat. In television, ad spending rose 3.2 per cent to $A301.3 million, while radio was up 0.4 per cent to $A47.2 million. Cinema recorded a rise of 43.6 per cent, to $A5.8 million. Outdoor declined 10.1 per cent to $A53.3 million while magazines recorded a fall in spend of 16.9 per cent to $A15.1 million. Among categories, food/alcoholic retail spending rose 33.5 per cent to $A32.2 million. The restaurants category improved year on year with bookings rising 16.6 per cent in July to $A28.6 million.

Advertising agency Droga5 Australia has secured an alliance with SurveyMonkey. The alliance with the online survey firm has allowed Droga5 to undertake market research on a proposed ad campaign at the start of the process of developing it rather than at the end. This has allowed Droga5 to obtain feedback on some ad campaigns within 48 hours

ROKT, eBay in digital ad deal

Bruce Buchanan, CEO of digital marketing company ROKT, has announced a new agreement with web auctions group eBay for the North American market. The Sydney-based firm forecasts revenue of up to $A200m by 2016 from the deal on targeted advertising for eBay users. In Australia, ROKT has Car­sales, Tigerair and Australia Post among its clients. The business has been provided with venture capital by the Square Peg Capital vehicle of Paul Bassat and James Packer, as well as by Lachlan Murdoch and Carsales CEO Greg Roebuck

STW gets ready to tackle big data
