The Ten Network’s director of sport production Adam Cush has advised that it will relinquish the Supercars’ free-to-air broadcasting rights at the end of 2020. Ten and pay-TV group Foxtel secured a six-year rights deal in 2013 which commenced in 2015. Ten indicated earlier in 2020 that it may not seek to renew the rights deal. Seven West Media previously held the free-to-air broadcasting rights, but its push to reduce costs means it may be unwilling to pay too much for the Supercars rights.

Seven West Media CEO James Warburton says the impending demise of the Holden brand will have a big impact on the advertising market, adding that the car-maker also sponsors many big events. Meanwhile, Supercars CEO Sean Seamer says it had already been holding discussions with a number of car brands following General Motors’ decision in late 2019 to discontinue the Commodore. Warburton notes that there has been a shift in the focus of Supercars to the racing teams rather than the traditional Holden-Ford rivalry.

A new deal is about to be struck for the TV broadcasting rights in Australia to Formula One automobile racing. Insiders say free-to-air group Ten Network and pay TV provider Foxtel will jointly hold the rights after Ten’s current exclusive contract ends in late 2015. The price is tipped to be around $A30m per annum compared with $A10m now. Meanwhile it appears US-based media group Time Warner is no longer interested in a takeover of Ten, which remains a target of suitors Discovery Communications and Foxtel
