Half Yours has become only the 13th horse to win the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup in the same year. Jamie Melham in turn is now the only female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup-Caulfield Cup double, and just the second female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. Half Yours was bought for $305,000 on the Inglis Digital Sale platform in 2024, and the owners of the five-year-old gelding have picked up $7.5m for winning the two prestigious races. Half Yours was trained by father-and-son team Tony and Calvin McEvoy; the former says Half Yours is a "very special horse". Half Yours won the Melbourne Cup by two lengths, ahead of Goodie Two Shoes and Middle Earth.

The coronavirus pandemic has prompted key sports codes such as the AFL and NRL to renegotiate their current broadcasting rights deals. However, horse racing coverage has attracted a growing audience during the pandemic, which is likely to result in a significant increase in the cost of the sport’s next broadcasting rights deals. Meanwhile, the fourth running of ‘The Everest’ is expected to attract record TV ratings on 17 October.

Seven West Media’s broadcasting rights deal for about 21 races in Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival expires on 30 June. These races include the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup. The Ten Network is believed to have expressed interest in gaining the rights to these race meetings, given that it already broadcasts the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival. Racing Victoria wants to renew its deal with Seven, although there is a push within the state’s racing industry for it to consider a bid from Ten. Seven and Racing Victoria are also joint venture partners in the Racing.com free-to-air TV channel.

Racing New South Wales chairman Russell Balding claims that the ABC’s recent story on the horse racing industry breached a number of its editorial guidelines. Balding, who was MD of the ABC from 2002 to 2006, has written a letter of complaint to ABC MD David Anderson about the program, claiming that it contained a number of ‘significant factual inaccuracies and misrepresentations’. Once the ABC has responded to the letter, Racing NSW will be able to lodge a complaint with the Australian Communications & Media Authority.

Racing industry punting on renewed interest with The Everest

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 18-Oct-19

New research from Roy Morgan shows that just over 5.2 million Australians aged 14+ (25%) now watch horse racing on TV, a drop of nearly 700,000 since 2015. Almost 5.1 million Australians watch the Melbourne Cup race broadcast, and 98% of Australians who watch any type of horse racing on TV watch the Melbourne Cup. The addition of Australia’s richest turf race, The Everest, to the racing calendar in 2017 has attracted a significant audience (over 750,000), but has yet to reverse the overall decline in TV viewership. Analysis shows that a third of Australians who still watch horse racing on TV are aged 65+, and less than a fifth are under 35. The gender split is fairly even, although men slightly outnumber women. These are the latest findings from the Roy Morgan Single Source survey, derived from in-depth face-to-face interviews with over 50,000 Australians each year in their homes.

Marmelo, part-owned by property developer Ozzie Kheir and wife Linsey, is current favourite to win the $A6.25 million Melbourne Cup on 7 November. Kheir runs property group Resimax, while Phil Mehrten, who also has an interest in Marmelo, founded Probuild, a construction company that generates around $A2 billion a year in revenue. The Kheirs had an interest in 2011 Cup third-place getter Lucas Cranach and 2014 winner Protectionist. Linsey Kheir was heavily pregnant on both occasions, as is the case at the moment.

Opponents line up to resist Tabcorp deal

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 37 : 24-Apr-17

Racing NSW CEO Peter V’Landys rejects suggestions that a merger between Tabcorp Holdings and Tatts Group would reduce competition for broadcasting rights for horse racing. Some submissions to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission have expressed concern that the merger would increase the market power of Tabcorp-owned Sky Racing at the expense of rivals such as Racing.com, which is a joint venture between Seven West Media and Racing Victoria.
