Research undertaken by the Irish Council For Civil Liberties highlights the national security implications of the Real Time Bidding system used by digital platforms to personalise online advertisements. The report notes that Google and Microsoft both send RTB data on Australian internet users to companies in China, which are required by law to share such information with the central government if they are asked to do so. The report’s author Dr Johnny Ryan says the RTB system is a "goldmine" for intelligence gathering, and could be exploited by foreign powers. The Coalition has urged the federal government to take urgent action to address the issue.

Shares in technology stocks such as Apple and Google have fallen sharply in response to the US District Court’s ruling that the latter has breached anti-trust laws. Judge Amit Mehta has concluded that Google is a ‘monopolist’, and it has acted as one to maintain its market dominance with regard to search services and advertising. Department of Justice prosecutors had contended amongst other things that Google has suppressed competition by paying billions of dollars to smartphone makers such as Apple and Samsung to use it as their default search engine.

The internet as a whole rather than Google specifically has hurt the business model of traditional media companies, according to the technology giant’s vice-president of news, Richard Gingras. He says the Google News Initiative demonstrates the company’s commitment to publishers and quality journalism. Gingras adds that Google’s core businesses of web search and advertising technology are highly dependent on the internet’s "ecosystem" continuing to feature quality content.

Google and Facebook increased their average revenue per user by 10.6 per cent over the June quarter, as the two companies continue their dominance of digital advertising revenue. However, some traditional media publishers were able to lift their revenue per user, including Fairfax Media, "The New York Times", and Dow Jones, which publishes the "Wall Street Journal". News Corp CEO Robert Thomson, which owns Dow Jones, says it is pleasing that Google at least is beginning to show a willingness to support traditional journalism.

Google has declined to comment on the cost of hiring Sir Elton John to perform at its annual Brandcast marketing event in Sydney, although industry sources suggest that the British music legend would have commanded a six-figure fee. Meanwhile, Google Australia and New Zealand MD Jason Pellegrino has conceded that the last year had been challenging for the digital giant. Advertisers boycotted its YouTube video-sharing site over the placement of ads alongside objectionable content, while Google has attracted scrutiny over tax avoidance, fake website traffic and the dissemination of fake news.

WPP Group CEO Martin Sorrell has stressed the need for a digital advertising audience measurement system that is independent, rather than relying on data supplied by digital giants such as Facebook and Google. WPP holds an 18.6 per cent stake in the merged ComScore and RenTrak, having acquired stakes in both companies prior to their amalgamation. Meanwhile, Sorrell has identified clients’ short-term focus as the major challenge for the advertising industry.
