A Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and under-employed shows that the real unemployment rate fell to 9.8 per cent in January 2015. This compares with an official unemployment rate of 6.1 per cent in December 2014. The total workforce has fallen by 127,000 to 12,627,000 since January 2014, and the number of Australians who are under-employed has fallen by 72,000 to 1,033,000 in the last 12 months. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan notes that more than 2.27 million Australians are either unemployed or under-employed, and the Federal Government must look seriously at industrial relations reform

Business confidence rebounds in January prior to the February RBA decision to drop rates

A Roy Morgan Business Single Source survey has found that Australian business confidence rose by 8.3 per cent to 114.9 in January 2015, compared with 105.3 in December 2014. This improvement was well above the average gain of 3.5 per cent for the month of January over the last four years. However, business confidence remains below the five-year average of 117.9. It is also well below the peak of 136.3 in October 2013, which followed the election of the Federal Government

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that seven per cent of Australians aged 14+ bought at least one eBook online in an average three months during the year to September 2014. Some 9.1 per cent of Australians in the 35-49 age group bought an eBook in an average three months, compared with 8.7 per cent in the previous year. The proportion of Australians in the 18-24 age group who buy eBooks online has risen from 3.9 per cent to 5.1 per cent in the last year, while the number of eBook buyers aged 65+ has risen from 4.1 per cent to 5.4 per cent

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 12.5 per cent of Australian households now have a Smart TV. The survey, which was carried out in the year to October 2014, also shows that 4.3 per cent of households use Telstra’s T-Box to access internet content, while four per cent have an Apple TV set-top digital media player. Meanwhile, some 576,000 Australians intend to buy a Smart TV in the next 12 months, while 281,000 intend to buy an Apple TV device

A special snap SMS Morgan Poll has found that 52 per cent of Australians believe that Australians convicted of drug trafficking in another country and sentenced to death should be executed. The survey, which was carried out from 23-27 January 2015, also shows that 62 per cent of Australians believe that the Federal Government should not do more to stop the execution of Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan in Indonesia. A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that six per cent of Australians aged 14+ now use two separate mobile telephones. The survey, which was carried out in the year to November 2014, also shows that 53 per cent have a phone that is paid for by their place of work and one which they pay for themselves. Meanwhile, more than 50 per cent of Australians who use two mobile phones are signed up with two different telcos, while 58 per cent have a post-paid plan for both handsets

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 37 per cent of Australians aged 18+ drank beer in an average four-week period during the year to September 2014. The survey also shows that 17 per cent of the nation’s beer drinkers consumed Carlton Draught, followed by Victoria Bitter (12 per cent) and XXXX Gold (12 per cent). Meanwhile, 94 per cent of Cascade Premium Light drinkers agree with the statement " I consider myself to be Australian", compared with 80 per cent of Australian beer drinkers overall

Budget deficit saps confidence

Roy Morgan Research’s business confidence index has fallen to its lowest level since August 2011. The index fell to 105.3 in December 2014, compared with 123 in November. Roy Morgan’s Norman Morris says business confidence was adversely affected by the Australian Government’s forecast of a $A40bn Budget deficit for 2014-15. A survey by the Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry also shows that there has been a sharp fall in business conditions
