Spotify denies its algorithm spurns Australian music

Original article by Michael Bailey

Spotify Australia MD Mikaela Lancaster says that the "vast majority" of song choices by the streaming service’s 13 million Australian users are actively made by them and not its algorithm. Lancaster was responding to claims that the algorithm ‘steers’ users away from Australian music, while she notes that Spotify paid out $250 million to Australian rights holders last year, with that figure expected to grow by a double-digit percentage this year. Spotify has launched a Turn Up Aus tile on its homepage and its search page that links to playlists of local music curated by its Sydney-based team.

Worst in 30 years: What Hottest 100 says about the state of Aussie music

Original article by Thomas Mitchell
The Age – Page: Online : 29-Jan-25

The ABC’s youth-focused radio station Triple J is under scrutiny after its annual Hottest 100 countdown featured just 29 Australian artists; this compares with 52 last year. The head of Triple J, Lachlan Macara, says Australian music discoverability is an issue, which has been exacerbated by the growing use of streaming music platforms. Local artists account for just 9.2 per cent of songs that are streamed in Australia, and Tim Kelly from the University of Technology Sydney notes that streaming platforms’ playlists are determined by algorithms rather than radio station programmers.

12.7 million Australians use streaming music services

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 17-Jun-20

Over 12.7 million Australians (61%) now use music streaming services in an average four weeks, an increase of over 3.7 million from three years ago. Spotify is the clear market leader, used by 8 million Australians; it has more than doubled its Australian user-base since 2017, up by 4.4 million (+122%). The most prominent rival to Spotify is clearly YouTube Music (including Google Play Music), now used by 5.5 million Australians (26%). Apple Music and SoundCloud are each used by substantial numbers of Australians as the third and fourth most popular services in the music streaming market. It is important to understand that these figures do not include all live radio streams and podcasts that Australians are able to listen to via these services. Early in 2019 over 1.6 million Australians downloaded podcasts in an average four weeks, and there are many others who livestream radio broadcasts of sporting events and talkback radio as well. In contrast to these growing services a declining minority of 8.1 million Australians (39%) do not currently use any music streaming services, a drop of 2.7 million from three years ago.

Action on streaming set back until 2022

A confidential consultation paper has recommended that the federal government delay a decision on whether live streaming is subject to the Broadcasting Act until 2022. The ministerial determination was made in 2000 by former Communications Minister Richard Alston, and it is slated to expire on 1 October 2019. The Department of Communications has advised that extending the so-called Alston determination would give the government more time to consider a broader range of reforms for broadcasting and streaming services, including its response to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission’s report on digital platforms.

Alston Determination on the agenda for Fletcher

Original article by Max Mason

The federal government is reviewing a ruling that online live streaming of TV and radio content is not subject to the Broadcasting Services Act. The ministerial determination was made in 2000 by former Communications Minister Richard Alston, and it is slated to expire on 1 October 2019. Amongst other things, scrapping the distinction between live streaming and broadcasting may impact on the cost of sports rights, given that the online and TV rights to sports such as the AFL and NRL are currently sold separately.

The liquidators of failed music streaming company Guvera state that they have found it difficult to contact its CEO, Darren Herft, according to a creditors’ report. Glenn Spooner and Daniel Juratowitch of Cor Cordis say they have contacted the Australian Securities & Investments Commission for assistance on the matter, but that it has not yet been able to help them. However, Herft has rejected suggestions that he is hard to contact, saying he is in the US at the moment, where he intends to relaunch Guvera.

Google Play/YouTube Music news streaming to shake up media

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 4-Mar-19

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey shows that over 5.4 million Australians now use music streaming services available via websites or apps. Spotify is the clear industry leader, used by nearly 3.6 million Australians in an average week (around four times the size of SoundCloud, which is used by around 900,000 Australians in an average week). Although Google Play Music (used by over 660,000 Australians), and the newer YouTube Music (used by nearly 600,000 Australians) do not capture a huge market share at this time, there are clearly strong prospects for growth as both services introduce news capabilities. At a combined level over 1.1 million Australians use either Google Play Music or YouTube Music in an average week. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says the announcement by Google that it will soon be streaming news via its Google Play Music streaming service presents yet another challenge to the revenue models of traditional media channels including TV, radio and newspapers.

Streaming a boon to music exports

Original article by Max Mason
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 3 : 12-Sep-18

The Australian Recording Industry Association has reported that music sales rose by six per cent to $195.6 million in the first half of 2018 when compared to the previous corresponding period. Streaming revenue accounted for 67 per cent of ARIA’s sales for the first half of 2018, compared to just 38 per cent of its sales for 2016. ARIA CEO Dan Rosen says music is something that Australia is really good at, and that streaming has helped to expose local acts to overseas markets.

YouTube Music set to challenge fast growing Spotify and SoundCloud

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 25-Jun-18

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that more than five million Australians aged 14+ now visit radio or music sites in an average four weeks. The survey, which was carried out via face-to-face interviews in the year to March 2018, also shows that nearly 2.2 million Australians now visit Spotify in an average four weeks. This is followed by SoundCloud with over 1.3 million visitors in an average four weeks and Triple M with over 520,000 visitors to its site. Apple Music and Google Play Music both have just under 400,000 visitors in an average four weeks. Meanwhile, 95.8% of visitors to Spotify and 94% of visitors to Apple Music also visit YouTube. More than 15.2 million Australians now access YouTube in an average four weeks, and its entry into the streaming music industry via YouTube Music represents a major threat to established players in the sector.
