CPA Australia estimates that the nation’s taxpayers spend about $13 complying with the tax system for every dollar that governments spend administering it. CPA Australia’s tax lead Jenny Wong says these compliance costs total about $60bn a year, which is about 50 per cent higher than a decade ago. Wong has urged the federal government to set a measurable target of reducing tax compliance costs by 10 per cent by 2030. She adds that Labor should publish the Board of Taxation’s review of red tape, which Treasury Jim Chalmers received at the end of June.
