Australian cricket players have been embroiled in a match-fixing scandal. An investigation by broadcaster Al Jazeera has raised allegations that two unidentified Australians were paid to score runs slowly during a Test match at Ranchi in India in 2017. The match-fixers are also alleged to have doctored the pitch for a Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Galle in 2016. Cricket Australia has released a statement saying that it is not aware of any "credible evidence" to suggest that Australian players are involved in match fixing, and that it will fully co-operate with an investigation by the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit.

Australia’s iron ore age nears peak

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 10 : 28-May-18

Australia now accounts for about 62 per cent of all iron ore shipments to China, compared with 43 per cent in 2010. He Ming of Wood Mackenzie forecasts that Australia’s iron ore exports to China will peak at 895 million tonnes in 2020 and 2021, before holding steady at around 884 million tonnes beyond 2023. Tony Robson of Global Mining Research expects Chinese steel mills’ demand for Australian iron ore to fall in coming years, as annual steel production peaks. Factors such as increased iron ore production in Brazil are also expected to weigh on Australian producers.

Two banks warn of big payouts if grandfathered deal ends

Original article by Joanna Mather
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 18 : 28-May-18

Certain commissions paid to financial advisers were banned as part of the Future of Financial Advice reforms in 2013. However, other types of commissions were "grandfathered". Michael Wright of Westpac subsidiary BT Financial Group has told the banking royal commission that grandfathered commissions should also be banned, but the ANZ Bank and AMP disagree. They have suggested that the federal government might have to pay compensation to advisers if grandfathered commissions were banned, while they have also suggested that a ban could be in breach of the Constitution.

Aussie dollar vulnerable to further EM turmoil

Original article by Patrick Commins
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 22 : 28-May-18

The Australian dollar has shed three per cent against its US counterpart so far in 2018. Rodrigo Catril of National Australia Bank expects the currency to trade within a range of $US0.75 to $US0.77 for the rest of the year. However, he warns that sustained volatility in emerging markets is a potential risk for the Australian dollar. Catril adds that this risk should remain relatively low unless the volatility extends beyond countries such as Turkey, Argentina and Venezuela.

Millennials plan to travel more than other Australians

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 28-May-18

The Roy Morgan Holiday Tracking Survey for the year to March 2018 shows that 68.3% of Australians aged 14+ are intending to take a holiday in the next 12 months, down 0.7 ppts from the same period in 2017. Although the majority of Australians intend to have at least one holiday in the coming year, there are some clear generational differences. Some 65% of Millennials are intending to take a short holiday in the next 12 months. This is well above the average Australian at 56.4%. Gen X was the only other generation to be more likely to intend to take a short trip in the next 12 months (61.1%). Meanwhile, Gen X and Baby Boomers lead for intention to take a long trip in the next 12 months (of three nights or more). While Millennials are just over the average for intention, they are not travelling as much as Gen X and Baby Boomers, who make up a large portion of long trip intenders.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 28-May-18

ALDImobile has won the Roy Morgan Mobile Phone Service Provider Monthly Customer Satisfaction Award for April, with a customer satisfaction rating of 84.1%. It is the brand’s second victory in 2018 and comes after leapfrogging March winner Virgin Mobile, which came in second in April on 80.8%. Analysis of the historical trends in satisfaction show that ALDImobile’s victory in April has been built upon a steady improvement over the last year; the brand has gained an average of just over 2ppts per month in customer satisfaction to catch and now overtake its rivals in recent months. ALDImobile is not itself a network provider but rather a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, which utilises the underlying Telstra mobile network to provide its service. When it comes to the underlying mobile networks, the Vodafone network with an overall customer satisfaction rating of 77.7% is narrowly ahead of both the Optus network on 76.9% and the Telstra network on 74.9%.

One Nation open to cutting deal on company tax cut

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 5 : 25-May-18

One Nation may be crucial to the Federal Government’s prospects of getting its company and personal income tax packages through the Senate. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has indicated that the party may be willing to agree to a revenue threshold of $A500m for the company tax cuts. One Nation also supports the first two stages of the government’s three-stage personal income tax package, and if it backs the final stage the government would be able to pass the entire package without Labor’s support.
