Formula 1 in town but sponsor recall higher for V8 Supercars

Research by Roy Morgan shows that over 4.9 million Australians watch motorsports on TV. Nearly 2.8 million Australians watched V8 Supercars and over 2.3 million watched Formula 1 in 2018. Some 48% of people attending a motorsports event over the last year associate Bathurst 1000 naming rights sponsor Supercheap Auto with V8 Supercars. Meanwhile, 43% of people who almost always watch V8 Supercars on TV associate Supercheap Auto with V8 Supercars, and 40% of those who occasionally watch V8 Supercars making the association. When it comes to Formula 1 it is five-time reigning Formula 1 Constructors Champions Mercedes on top, with 19% of motorsport attendees associating the German auto manufacturer with Formula 1, while Melbourne Grand Prix naming rights sponsor Rolex is mentioned by 17% of motorsport attendees.

AFL kicking goals as Toyota signs record $18.5m annual sponsorship deal

Toyota has renewed its naming-rights sponsorship deal with the Australian Football League until 2023. The car-make will pay $18.5m a year to be the AFL’s major sponsor, compared with $16m annually under its current deal. As part of the new deal, Toyota will also become the AFL’s official community partner, as well as the official automotive partner of the women’s AFL competition. The AFL’s latest financial report shows that it boasted revenue of more than $200m from commercial operations in 2018, including sponsorship packages.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey shows that nearly 3.5 million Australians aged 14+ (or 17%) associate the Australian Open’s major sponsor Kia with the year’s first Grand Slam tournament. In addition, nearly 2 million Australians aged 14+ (10%) associate the Australian Open’s associate partner ANZ with the tournament. Leading sports apparel companies Adidas and Nike – which both personally sponsor several leading tennis players – are associated with the Australian Open by 9% and 8% of Australian respectively. Meanwhile, nearly a third of Australians who play tennis (32%) associate Kia with the Australian Open and 19% associate ANZ with the tournament. Once again sports apparel companies Adidas (14% of tennis players) and Nike (13%) are regarded by many tennis-playing Australians as being associated with the tournament, while official sponsors Emirates (7%), Dunlop (4%) and Optus (4%) are also widely associated with the Australian Open by those Australians who play the sport.

Sportsbet takes AFL TV deal from CrownBet

Sportsbet has secured a deal to be the betting sponsor of Seven West Media’s Australian Football League broadcasts in 2017. However, rival online bookmaker CrownBet is the AFL’s official wagering partner, which gives it the first right to buy betting advertisements during the AFL broadcasts of both Seven and pay-TV channel Fox Footy. Meanwhile, CrownBet CEO Matthew Tripp says the company plans to expand its rewards scheme in states such as Western Australia.

Huawei patrol: has the AFL and NRL’s only mobile handset sponsor backed the right teams?

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that over four million Australians aged 14+ (21 per cent) plan to buy a new mobile phone in the next 12 months. The survey, which was carried out in the year to June 2016, also shows that 23 per cent of AFL and NRL club supporters intend to buy a new handset in the next 12 months. Huawei is currently the only handset maker that is a sponsor of an AFL or NRL team. Huawei is a major sponsor of the Canberra Raiders, and 24 per cent of the NRL team’s supporters intend to buy a new handset in the next 12 months. However, Raiders fans are almost 20 per cent less likely than average to want one of the two dominant handset brands, the Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Huawei is also a technology and ball partner of the Gold Coast Suns, and 34 per cent of the AFL team’s fans are in the market for a new mobile phone, while they also more likely to have their hearts set on an Apple iPhone.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 4.7 million Australians (or 24.5 per cent of the population) associate principal partner and naming-rights sponsor Emirates with the Melbourne Cup. The survey, which was carried out in the year to June 2015, also shows that 47 per cent of Australians who say they "always watch" the Melbourne Cup on TV associate Emirates with the race, while 37 per cent of occasional viewers are aware of the link. In contrast, 15.7 per cent of the population associate the Australian Open Tennis’s major sponsor Kia with the tournament and 10.8 per cent associate Toyota with the AFL.

SBS on a roll with Tour de France cycling and World Cup

The 2014 Tour de France cycling event is expected to generate good TV audience ratings for public broadcaster SBS in Australia.
