In June support for New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s Labour Party was at 54.5% – down 2% since May, but still more than double the support for National on 27% (up only 0.5%) two months before the election in mid-September. If an election were held today Labour could govern without the help of either New Zealand First or the Greens. The large decline in support for National since being level with Labour on 40% in January prompted the Opposition to replace former leader Simon Bridges with Todd Muller in late May. The latest results for June show the change in leadership had a negligible impact on support for National and this week Muller resigned after less than two months in the job, citing health reasons. This New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone – both landline and mobile – with a NZ wide cross-section of 879 electors during June. Of all electors surveyed 6% (up 0.5%) didn’t name a party.

A special Roy Morgan SMS Survey shows that 58% of New Zealanders think it is either "Very likely" (19%) or "Fairly likely" (39%) that North Korea will use a nuclear weapon. Meanwhile, 42% say North Korea is "Fairly unlikely" (31%) or "Very unlikely" (11%) to do so. The poll, which was taken after the New Zealand election in September, also shows that 78% of New Zealanders want the opposing sides in the North Korean stand-off to reach a peaceful diplomatic solution. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says 60% of National Party supporters and 59% of Labour supporters say it is likely North Korea will use a nuclear weapon, while 75% of National supporters and 80% of Labour supporters want a peaceful diplomatic solution to the stand-off rather than a military solution.

The final Roy Morgan New Zealand Poll before the September 2017 election shows that the Labour/Greens alliance (60 seats) is favoured to win a knife-edge election with Maori Party support, with National/NZ First/Act NZ to win 58 seats. Support for a potential Labour/Greens coalition has increased to 48.5% (up 7% from mid-August 2017), now well ahead of the incumbent National Party on 40% (down 2.5%). Labour’s support has surged on the back of new Leader Jacinda Ardern to 39.5% – up 14.4% since the 2014 Election and up 7% since mid-August, just after she became Leader. The Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has fallen 2pts to 137pts in September. Roy Morgan Research CEO Gary Morgan says the narrow gap between the major parties means the final outcome of the election will be decided by the second string parties – and it is here that Labour has a decisive edge.

A New Zealand Roy Morgan poll shows that 27.9% of New Zealanders believe that Economic issues 28% (up 1% since May 2017) or Housing-related issues 26% (up 3%) are the most important problems facing the nation in the lead-up to the election on 23 September. Within the group of Economic & Housing-related issues the most important issues are Poverty and the gap between rich & poor (mentioned by just under 17% of respondents), House prices & Housing affordability (mentioned by 16% of respondents), and Housing shortages & Homelessness (mentioned by 10% of respondents). Roy Morgan Research CEO Michele Levine says Labour Party Leader Jacinda Ardern’s strong focus on dealing with issues surrounding Housing affordability and the housing shortage and homelessness appear to have struck a chord with the electorate.

A New Zealand Roy Morgan poll, which was conducted in August 2017, shows that 27.9% of New Zealanders believe Economic issues are the most important problems facing New Zealand in the lead-up to the election in September, followed by Housing/Homelessness issues (26%). Single issue analysis of the responses shows that the specific issue of greatest concern for New Zealand is Poverty and the gap between rich and poor, mentioned by just under 17% of New Zealanders (up nearly 3% on the figure in May). Meanwhile, 25.4% of New Zealanders identified War & Terrorism as the most important issues facing the World, followed by Economic issues (23.2%). Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says New Zealand’s Election is a contest between the fresh ideas provided by new Labour Leader Jacinda Ardern and the steady hand of a National Government which has presided over nine years of relatively strong growth.

A New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention has found that support for the incumbent National Party has fallen by 0.5% to 42.5% in mid-August 2017. Support for the Labour Party has risen 2% to 32.5%, while support for a potential Labour/Greens alliance has fallen 2.5% to 41.5%. The Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has fallen 0.5pts to 139pts. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says new Labour Leader Jacinda Ardern stands a very real chance of toppling incumbent Prime Minister Bill English, but it will likely be with the support of Winston Peters and his New Zealand First party, whose recent increases in support make it ever more likely that Peters will get to decide who emerges as PM after next month’s election.

A New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention has found that support for the ruling National Party has fallen by 0.5 per cent to 43 per cent in April 2017. Support for the Labour Party was unchanged at 29.5 per cent, while support for a potential Labour/Greens alliance has fallen by 1.5 per cent to 43 per cent. Support for New Zealand First rose three per cent to 10.5 per cent. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that if NZ First maintains this level of support in the lead-up to the election later in 2017 it will win up to 14 seats in the new Parliament and party leader Winston Peters is likely to return to the Government benches for the first time since 2008.

A New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention has found that support for the ruling National Party fell by 4.5% to 45% per cent in December 2016. The poll also shows that support for a potential Labour/Greens alliance has risen by 5.5% per cent to 43%, while the NZ Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has fallen by 10 points to 131 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says New Zealand ends 2016 with a new Prime Minister after former Finance Minister Bill English stepped into the top job following the shock resignation of John Key early in December, and New Zealanders can now look forward to a competitive election later in 2017. Key’s leadership had seemed to assure National of winning a fourth term next year. However, if the results of today’s Morgan Poll are repeated at the election it will be NZ First – 7.5% (down 0.5%) – that will get to determine who forms New Zealand’s next Government.

A special New Zealand Roy Morgan telephone survey, which was conducted in October 2016, shows that 40% of respondents (down 5% since July) identify Government/Public Policy/Housing issues as the most important problems facing New Zealand. Within this bundle of concerns, Housing affordability/Increasing house prices (17%) and Housing shortage/Homelessness (10%) are the most prominent. Meanwhile, 31% of New Zealanders identify Economic Issues as the most important problems facing the nation (down 1%). The survey also shows that 30% of New Zealanders regard War & Terrorism/Security issues/Refugee Crisis as the biggest problems facing the world (down 1%).

The poll also shows that support for a potential Labour/Greens alliance has fallen by 0.5% per cent to 37.5%, while the NZ Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has risen by 14.5 points to 141 points. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan notes that the National Party now has its strongest lead since July. In contrast, the poor performance of Labour in November will be a concern for Opposition Leader Andrew Little heading into an election year. Labour has plunged to support of only 23% (down 3.5%) – its lowest support since late 2014.
