A special Roy Morgan SMS Survey taken on December 14-15 shows that 76% of Australians aged 18+ are opposed to US President Donald Trump’s decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel. Only 24% of Australians expressed support for the decision. L-NP support for the decision is 41%, which is more than double supporters of Labour and the Greens. A separate Roy Morgan SMS Survey shows that 75% of New Zealanders oppose Trump’s decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel, while 25% of New Zealanders support the decision.

It’s Official: Australians support assisted dying or euthanasia

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 13-Nov-17

A special Roy Morgan Snap SMS Survey has found that 87% of Australians aged 18+ (up a significant 18% since May 1996) are in favour of "letting patients die when they are hopelessly ill and experiencing unrelievable suffering with no chance of recovery". In contrast, just 10% (down 7%) say doctors should "try to keep patients alive" and 3% (down 11%) are undecided. In 1946, when Roy Morgan first asked this question the Australian population was divided: 42% said "let the patient die", 41% said "try to keep the patient alive" and 17% were undecided. Since then support has increased fairly consistently. Analysis of supporters of various political parties shows that large majorities of supporters of all parties now support "letting the patient die", led by 91% of Greens voters, 88% of National voters, 87% of ALP voters and 86% of Liberal voters.

Drop in NXT support gives Nick Xenophon reason to ‘flee’ to SA

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 30-Oct-17

The High Court of Australia sitting as the Court of Disputed Returns has judged that South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon was not improperly elected to Federal Parliament at the 2016 Federal Election. However, Xenophon has signalled that he will be returning to State politics anyway, and an in-depth analysis of recent Roy Morgan poll results can reveal why jumping back to State politics may be the smart move for the NXT Leader. Support for the Nick Xenophon Team has dropped alarmingly since the Federal Election, with nationwide support now at just 0.5%, down from a Federal Election return of 1.9% just over a year ago. In Xenophon’s home State the drop has been even more significant with NXT support in October of only 9.5%, down 11.8% from last year’s South Australian State total of 21.3%. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says that if NXT is to survive in Federal Parliament without its charismatic leader who has vowed to contest next year’s South Australian Election as the Leader of his new party SA Best, the outgoing Senator Xenophon must choose his replacement Senator wisely.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 16-Oct-17

A special Roy Morgan Snap SMS Survey taken on 6-8 October shows that 61.5% of Australians are voting "Yes" in favour of same-sex marriage in the postal plebiscite. Some 17.5% are voting "No", while a further 21% did not answer the question or have no intention of voting. Personal approvals don’t matter, says pollster Gary Morgan

Original article by Luke Henriques Gomes
The New Daily – Page: Online : 14-Sep-17

Pollster Gary Morgan says leadership approval ratings do not necessarily translate into electoral success. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is performing poorly against Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in personal approval polls, despite Labor being ahead of the government in polling. Morgan, the executive chairman of Roy Morgan Research, cites examples such as Margaret Thatcher and Helen Clark of politicians who enjoyed electoral success despite low approval ratings. He says voters focus on issues important to them, rather than on political party leaders. Roy Morgan each week surveys face to face an Australian wide cross section of about 1,000 people aged 14 and over. Voting intention of electors is available to subscribers and clients.

Australians split down the middle on whether North Korea will use a nuclear weapon; as expected Australians want a peaceful diplomatic solution to North Korean stand-off

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 18-Sep-17

A special snap SMS Morgan Poll taken on 14 September 2017 shows that Australians are evenly split on whether North Korea will use a nuclear weapon: 51% say it is either "Fairly unlikely" (33%) or "Very unlikely" (18%) to do so, while 49% say it is "Fairly likely" (33%) or "Very likely" (16%) to do so. Meanwhile, 81% of Australians want the opposing sides in the North Korean stand-off to reach a peaceful diplomatic solution, and only 19% believe a peaceful diplomatic solution is not working and a military one is needed. Analysing the results by voting preference shows supporters of the major parties are also split down the middle on whether North Korea will use a nuclear weapon, and large majorities of supporters of all parties are in favour of a peaceful diplomatic solution. Roy Morgan Research CEO Gary Morgan says the consensus across political lines also extends across both genders, all age groups and around all of Australia’s States. However, the snap SMS Morgan Poll was taken before North Korea’s latest provocation when the regime of Kim Jong-Un fired a ballistic missile nearly 4,000km eastward across the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

$1m poll could do job of $122m plebiscite

Original article by Andrew Tillett
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 9-Aug-17

Pollster John Scales of JWS Research has questioned the cost of the Federal Government’s proposed postal plebiscite on same-sex marriage. Scales argues that the estimated cost of $A122m is excessive, and his firm could poll 1,000 people in each federal electorate with a margin of error of 3.1 per cent, and at a cost of less than $A1.1m. Scales notes that postal votes have similar limitations to public opinion polls, adding that there was a response rate of just 47 per cent for Australia’s last postal vote in 1997.
