A spokesman for Twitter says the social media company is constantly monitoring its platform for keywords and hashtags that might be associated with content advocating terrorism or other extremist activity. Twitter says more than 90 per cent of terrorist content is proactively removed from its platform, and it will continue to invest in technology to address the issue as well as co-operating with governments and industry. Social media companies have attracted scrutiny after the Christchurch mosque shootings were live-streamed on Facebook.

Social media companies and internet service providers will meet with Prime Minister Scott Morrison on 26 March. The meeting has been convened in the wake of the live-streaming of the Christchurch mosque shootings on Facebook. Morrison says the federal government will act if social media companies are not prepared to take steps to prevent the use of their platforms in a similar fashion. The threat of jail terms for social media executives who are not seen to be co-operating with the government on the issue has been raised.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for social media platforms to suspend live streaming in the wake of the Christchurch terrorist attack. Brenton Tarrant used Facebook to live stream his attack, and versions of his video were then seen on Twitter and YouTube. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have blocked and removed hundreds of versions of the video, while Facebook took down 1.5 million videos of the footage within 24 hours of the attack. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she intends to take up the issue of live streaming with Facebook directly.

SBS and Optus are the official Australian broadcasters of the 2018 soccer World Cup in Russia. SBS is said to have paid $A40m for the local rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, before securing a sub-licensing deal with the telco. However, there is concern that many consumers will bypass the official broadcasters by using streaming devices that provide access to pirated broadcasts of the World Cup from overseas TV networks.

Google has declined to comment on the cost of hiring Sir Elton John to perform at its annual Brandcast marketing event in Sydney, although industry sources suggest that the British music legend would have commanded a six-figure fee. Meanwhile, Google Australia and New Zealand MD Jason Pellegrino has conceded that the last year had been challenging for the digital giant. Advertisers boycotted its YouTube video-sharing site over the placement of ads alongside objectionable content, while Google has attracted scrutiny over tax avoidance, fake website traffic and the dissemination of fake news.

The new measures include a requirement that a video must be viewed at least 10,000 times before it starts to generate advertising revenue.

The five-day festival will commence on 7 February 2017, and the Ten Network will broadcast the 16 finalist films on channel Eleven.
